Front Cover and Contents

Evaluation questions:
How have you used technology?
What have you learnt from completing this task?
What conventions have you used and why?
What would you change if you were to do this task again?
  • I took the image for my front cover using a cannon camera. It took many shots to get the correct one I was looking for. I then took this image to Photo Shop to manipulate the colours and lighting. I used Google Images to find the 'splat' image for a plug which was included on the front cover and contents page. I added a bar code onto the front cover on the bottom left corner which I also downloaded from Google Images. I used Photo Shop to insert my colour scheme which is lilac and black. I created the lilac boxes on my front cover using Photo Shop so that the Cover Lines were visible. I also used Photo Shop to use the correct font which associated with my magazine theme. The same font was then used for my contents page.
  • By completing this task I have learnt that I must add development details, explaining and conveying how I got to my final product. This includes adding the images before I took the perfect shot.
  • The conventions I have included are a Masthead, a Cover Image, Feature Stories, a Bar Code, the Price, a Cover Story and a plug. The Masthead for my magazine front cover is 'Polaroid'. This acts as the title to my magazine therefore the font is the biggest on the full page. I decided to use this specific font as the Polaroid Camera was invented around 1948 which creates an old fashioned effect therefore I needed a font to associate with the formality. The Cover Image is also connected to the theme of my magazine (which is photography) and the Masthead as the model is holding a Zenit camera which was manufactured around 1952. The Cover Image is a medium close up which fills the front cover which is exactly what I wanted.
  • If i was to do this task again I would experiment with a wide range of fonts to see which would fit with the magazine title. I would definitely improve the contents page as there is no colour scheme. The sub-headings should be more clear as to what the feature stories include.

Magazine Name

As I am looking to do a Photography magazine or a Art and Design magazine, these are some Name Ideas relating to these subjects in which I can use.

Sculpt -
I like this name  as it relates to art and design. This word is short but dramatic which will make a great magazine masthead.

Design -
I like the name Design as people will know what this magazine consists of as soon as they read the masthead.

Graphix -
This would be a great magazine masthead because of the unusual spelling which makes the magazine seem fun and interesting to read.

Craft -
I like this name for my magazine as it is short and snappy. This would be great for an art magazine which is what I am aiming to create. This could be written in a font as though it has been crafted to give interesting detail.

Pattern -
Pattern is a great name for a magazine as it is associated with art and design but can also cause a great design for the magazine layout using patterns.

Polaroid -
I like this name as it is a type of camera which would be great for a photography magazine.

Flash -
Flash is a great name for a photography magazine because cameras use a flash. The word is also short and snappy which will grab the readers attention. This would be written in a bold font expressing its meaning.

Shoot -
Shoot is also a short and snappy word representing a camera, this could also merge with the idea for 'Flash' as it could look as though it is a fashion photo-shoot.

Colour Scheme

For my College Magazine, I intend to use these colours. Although this palette I have chosen includes secondary colours such as purple and lilac,  I am very fond of it as all colours match well together. This will make my magazine look more professional as no colours are too unique.
My intentions are to have the Masthead purple, along with the Cover Line and Cover Story Headings. The rest of the writing such as the Cover Stories will be black. Black and purple are my two chosen dominant colours. If my Cover Image darker than I expected, I will then change my colour to white. Any Splash Graphic's or competitions will be lilac.

This was my first idea for my Magazine colour scheme as I like the two purple colours.

Camera Framings

This shot is a High Angle Shot. I took this by standing on a higher ground than the main object.

This shot is a Image framed to the left. This would be useful for a magazine cover as the cover stories  would appear onto the right hand side.

This shot is a Image framed to the right. This would be useful for a magazine cover as the cover stories would appear onto the left hand side.

This is a Long Shot therefore the landscape is also captured.

This is a Low Angle Shot where the camera is facing upwards to the object.

This is a Two Shot which is of two people.

This is a Central Image where the main object is in the middle of the shot.

This is a Close Up Shot, which is aiming at the head and shoulders.

This is an Extreme Close Up Shot, focusing very closely, on an object or body part.

This is a Medium Close Up  Shot therefore the shot ends just below the shoulders. This is the camera shot I am using for my magazine.

Brief

To design a College magazine fron cover and mock up contents page. Images used on the front cover must be original.
